sting

Located at the end of the abdomen. Only in the queen and workers.

antenna

Very mobile sensory antennae the bee uses to feel, smell and even taste.

smoker

Equipment the beekeeper uses to generate smoke, which has a calming effect on the bees.

bee dance

Language used by bees to convey information about the location of food.

bee house

A dry place accommodating a number of hives, protected from prevailing winds.

colony

All bees queen, workers, drones and spawn belonging to one hive. Also known by extension as a hive.

spawn

All the eggs, larva and growing young bees.

cel

Hexagonal space in the comb.

cells

Hexagonal forms built from wax by the bees. The queen lays her eggs and the bees store pollen and honey in these cells.

compound eye

Eyes on each side of the bee’s head made up of 4000 facets, which gives the bee a 360° field of vision.

worker

Worker that leaves the hive in search of nectar, pollen, water or propolis.

honey stomach

A small stomach located immediately in front of the bee’s stomach proper, used for storing nectar on the journey back to the hive.

honey chamber

Upper part of the hive frequented only by workers to put honey into the combs. One hive can have one or more honey chambers.

waggle dance

Figure of eight dance performed by the worker to communicate the discovery of a source of food more than 100 metres away from the hive.

nectar

Sugary fluid secreted by blooming plants.

propolis

Resinous substance collected by bees from buds on tree bark and used to fill crevices and holes in their comb. Propolis also works as a disinfectant.

comb

Hexagonal cells built from wax by the bees. The queen lays her eggs and the bees store pollen and honey in these cells.

round dance

Circular dance performed by the worker to communicate the discovery of a source of food less than 100 metres away from the hive.

pistle

Female organs of a flower, comprising stigma, style and ovary.

pollen

Powdery substance discharged from the male part of a flower, which bees chew to produce grains.

proboscis

A highly developed tube-shaped lower lip used to suck nectar from flowers among other things.

plank

Plank at the entrance to the hive, where the bees land.

wax

Secretion from the segments on the underside of the abdomen of workers used to build combs.

wax secretion

Workers secrete wax from the last four segments on the underside of the abdomen. They then chew and mould the wax to build combs.

swarm

Part of the colony that leaves the colony along with the queen to found a new colony.

swarm creation

The recovery by the beekeeper of the swarm in an empty hive. This is how a new colony is established.
