The actual MELI PARK only came into existence in 1952.
The original complex of buildings was expanded with three party rooms. Further additions included an exotic bird park in a beautifully laid out garden.
Thus came about the Meli Park, and it gradually became a household word for honey, for a day out on Sunday and for the location where all kinds of family celebrations took place. Together with the Antwerp Zoo and the Caves of Han, Meli Park became synonymous with a relaxing and instructive day out.
In the 1960s the park expanded regularly. School trips for children and group trips for adults to Meli Park were organised. In the mean time the French had discovered Meli Park as well, and on Sunday evenings they caused congestion on the roads between Veurne and Ypres up to the French border.
In the 1970s several other parks were created, each one with different, even larger attractions: Bobbejaanland, Bellewaerde and Walibi. Gradually people had more free time and visited the parks to enjoy themselves.
The opening of Euro Disney in Paris in the early 1990s drastically changed the image of the amusement park. Parks became “big business” and visitors became real tourists. People started travelling further and further.
At the end of 1999 the Florizoone family decided to sell Meli Park to a major Flemish media group. This secured its future as a child- and family-friendly park.
MELI is currently a company as originally conceived by the founder: putting the natural product of honey at the disposal of the public at large.
The base of operations is now a brand-new, modern building in Veurne. Today’s familiar Meli products still retain the memory of more than 60 years of Meli Park.
